Your first steps on the strip
Everything a brand-new fencer needs to know before that first visit.
None at all. Our introductory lessons are designed for people with no fencing experience whatsoever. New fencers begin with a free 20-minute lesson on their first visit, then continue with a five-lesson introductory package. After that, you can join the Musketeer program (ages 7–8) or the Beginner level. See how to get started →
New fencers receive a free 20-minute lesson during their first visit to NJFA. Just inquire at the front desk when you arrive, or schedule ahead by email, phone, or in person. Start free →
Our youngest fencers, the Musketeers, are ages 7–8. Beyond that, our programs serve children, teens, and adults across every level — so there's a place for the whole family. Explore our programs →
No special clothing or equipment is needed to begin — NJFA provides the gear for your free first lesson, and all equipment is sanitized and never shared. Comfortable athletic clothing and sneakers are perfect. Have a question before you come in? →
Not to start — NJFA provides gear for beginners, and all equipment is sanitized and not shared. Beginner-level rental gear is available for $35/month. Intermediate fencers need a full set, rented or purchased. Advanced/Elite fencers need two or more sets of their weapon, two body cords (plus two head cords for foil and sabre). Members can buy Absolute Fencing gear at the front desk, and we have an on-site pro-shop.
NJFA teaches all three fencing weapons: foil, sabre, and épée. Learn more about our programs →
Fencing is a relatively safe sport. Blades are blunted, bending steel; masks are FIE-tested; protective clothing is made of ballistic nylon and Kevlar; and a strict code of etiquette is taught from the very first lesson. Safety and respect are built into how we train.
